Your phone can hold two lines. The travel eSIM carries the data; your home SIM keeps the number that your bank and your apps know.
When you land
- Turn off airplane mode and wait for the phone to find a network.
- Turn the eSIM line on.
- Choose the eSIM for mobile data.
- Keep your home line on for calls and messages.
The setting names differ by phone: on iPhone the data choice is under Cellular, on Android under SIMs or Mobile network. Switch the data line shows the exact paths.
Data roaming
- On your home line, turn data roaming off, so your home carrier cannot bill you in the background.
- On the eSIM line, follow the plan page: it says per plan whether data roaming must be on.
Codes and messages
Bank codes and login messages sent by SMS still arrive on your home number, because that line stays active. Apps that were signed in with that number stay signed in; they only need data, which is what the eSIM gives them.
When the data does not start
Give the phone a minute, then walk through the checks on eSIM not connecting. The plan page says when the days of the plan start.
