Switch the data line

Short answer

Keep both lines on. Choose the eSIM for mobile data, and keep your home line for calls and messages. On iPhone the data choice sits under Cellular; on Android it sits under SIMs or Mobile network.

Checked 12 October 2026

Your phone can hold two lines at the same time. Use the travel eSIM for data and keep your own number for calls, messages and bank codes.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Service.
  2. Choose Cellular Data, then pick the eSIM line.
  3. Leave the home line on under Calls and Messages.

On Android

  1. Open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs.
  2. Choose Mobile data, then pick the eSIM line.
  3. Leave the home line on for calls and messages.

Do you turn off roaming when using eSIM?

Back to the home line

To use your home data again, do the same steps and choose the home line for mobile data. Switch it back when your trip ends, and turn the eSIM line off; you can also delete the eSIM at that point.

The full arrival sequence is on How do I activate an eSIM?. A missing connection is covered on eSIM not connecting.
